General CV Advice

Find out how to showcase your skills

What is a CV or Resume?

A CV is a demonstration of your education, employment history and general skills. It is the means by which an employer will judge your suitability for any given position. Understanding your career development to date will allow any potential employer to assess your transferable skills against the position or positions available. An employer will have many applicants for any single job and it is therefore important to make your CV informative and concise to give any potential employer a clear and brief appreciation of your capabilities and potential.

General CV Advice

If you are a student you will have access to career advice at your place of study, for anyone looking to prepare or revise a CV there are many templates available online. It is worth looking at a few to see which you feel is best suited to your experience. Although you may choose a particular template your experience and skills are unique and your CV should reflect your individual strengths.

Your CV should always be typed and laid out clearly. Consider using bullet points or line separation to distinguish between jobs and/or significant contracts. Remember an employer will only have a very short time to consider your CV. If the information is not immediately clear it will probably be rejected. Once complete re-read slowly and remember to spellcheck.

There is no perfect length for a CV, however as a rule of thumb you should aim for all information to cover between one and three A4 pages dependant on your length of experience. Remember employers read lots of CV’s, if it is too long it will not be read, therefore it is vital you distil your experience into as concise a form as possible without omitting any relevant details. Make it easy to read and digest, not too cramped or congested.

Sometimes less is more.
